Recent studies have shown that 25% of all teens and 30% of female teens will suffer from an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives. Teen anxiety disorders have been on the rise since 1938.

While there is not a clear-cut reason why the gradual increase, many experts believe the reason to be cultural changes and not necessarily related to demands for the teen to perform academically or athletically.

On top of that, 80% of teens with anxiety disorders are not being treated. Treatment does not require drugs either. Plenty of holistic methods effectively treat teen anxiety disorders before drugs are necessary.

Often the only treatment a teen may need is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or other forms of talk therapy to help the teen reestablish appropriate connections from realistic and unrealistic thoughts. Also, let’s not overlook the mind body connection, which is where Santa Cruz NonForce Chiropractors and my work come into play.

Everything that we do and feel is regulated by our nervous system. Misalignment, especially in the neck, can cause pressure on the brainstem, which can cause interference neurologically and chemically.

Re-aligning these vertebrae can do wonders for our moods and can aid in switching us out of the flight and fight response that gets us stuck.

And while chiropractic is unlikely to cure an anxiety disorder, it can definitely help facilitate a recovery. In one study, out of 2818 patients getting chiropractic care, 76% of the patients reported an improvement in stress levels and mental/emotional state.

Our minds and our bodies are deeply connected. Whatever manifests as emotional turmoil will show up in your body sometimes in not so obvious ways.

If you are experiencing tension headaches, TMJ or jaw pain, or feel like your shoulders are tight like rocks, these are indications that you are experiencing mental/emotional stress that your body is having trouble processing.

Luckily, for us there are many tricks and tips you can do at home to help your teen or yourself deal with these emotional stressors.
